News that pockets of the state are experiencing record growth has many advocacy groups running in ant-step to state and local government officials. “Land for Tomorrow,” a coalition of eco-friendly interest groups, wants a $1 billion bond issue to go before voters for conservation and preservation efforts.  The proposal, said John Hood in the Asheville Citizen-Times, would be a waste of money, considering the number of higher priorities that must be addressed.  Two of those priorities are maintaining and expanding roads and extending water lines.  To aid transportation concerns, Joe Coletti offers that more control and responsibility be given to local governments.  With the added power, local governments could charge riders directly for their use of specific roads. As for waterworks, George Leef supports the conclusion of Fredrik Segerfeldt in his book Water for Sale: How Business and the Market Can Resolve the World’s Water Crisis. Even though supplying water isn’t a concern in the US, the water monopoly is – if you’re worried about the cost of providing the resource.
