The Greensboro City Council balked at providing $1.2 million in funding for the Nussbaum Center to renovate its proposed new headquarters.

Something tells me the issue’s not closed and the city will find money from somewhere to help the business incubator relocate. Trudy Wade — the most skeptical voice on the council —-suggested that the Nussbaum Center seek federal stimulus bonds to help with renovation of the former Carolina Steel building. Good luck with that.

On that note, the council approved an ordinance establishing the Southeastern Building as a Guilford County landmark. The designation will provide a tax break for developers who purchased the building for years ago but have struggled to get renovations underway.

Again, council members asked developer Barry Siegal if he had pursued stimulus bonds. Siegal said he had, but was unable to secure the letter of credit required. Interestingly enough, he said he was looking to HUD to provide some form of assistance, but —–of all things —–HUD requires that parking issues be addressed beforehand.

For those unaware, the Southeastern Building is located smack in the heart of downtown Greensboro, where parking is already an issue.
