Fresh from earning the Useful Idiot of the Week? Award by traveling to Hugo Chavez’s Communist dictatorship of Venezuela to declare President George W. Bush “the greatest tyrant in the world, the greatest terrorist in the world,” Harry Belafonte is at Duke right now as the featured speaker to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.

In case anyone thinks Duke might be embarrassed or chagrined that Belafonte will be speaking so soon after being Hugo’s lickspittle, please note:

… Duke has received a few messages from people concerned about recent remarks Belafonte reportedly made about the war in Iraq and other issues. “Harry Belafonte was the unanimous choice of the committee and we look forward to welcoming him to the Duke campus,” Reese said.

Had Belafonte used his opportunity to point out that Chavez’s government had turned Venezuela into one of the most repressive governments on earth, worse than Syria, Nigeria, Cuba, and Haiti and only slightly better than Iran and North Korea … well, I’m not sure how embarrassed Duke would be now or whether he’d even be speaking today.
