Patrick Allitt was born and raised in Mickleover, England, and was an undergraduate at Oxford University in the mid 1970s. He earned a Ph.D. in American history from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1986 and has been a professor of history at Emory University, in Atlanta, since 1988. He is the author of six books, most recently, The Conservatives: Ideas and Personalities Throughout American History (Yale University Press, 2009). His memoir of contemporary academic life I’m the Teacher, You’re the Student: A Semester in the University Classroom appeared in 2004. He is also the presenter of seven “Great Courses” lecture series in audio and video format from The Teaching Company, of which the most recent is the 24-part series “The Art of Teaching.”
