Richard Stradling is a staff writer for The News & Observer. He’s been a reporter and editor for 32 years, starting at The Vineyard Gazette on Martha’s Vineyard in 1987. He later worked at The Concord Monitor in New Hampshire and The Daily Press in Newport News, Va., before coming to The N&O in 1999 to cover growth and development in the Triangle. That beat included writing about the census, something he has continued to do through various beat and job changes at the paper. Richard has a master’s in journalism from Ohio State University and a bachelor’s in biology and environmental studies from Oberlin College. He is co-author with his brother David of “Where the River Burned: Carl Stokes and the Struggle to Save Cleveland,” from Cornell University Press. He and his wife have two grown children and live in Raleigh.
