Here’s what jumped out at me in this morning’s Journal article on WSFCS’ budget request:

The school system has received 6 percent increases in the past two years, and consistently received 3 percent to 4 percent increases in the 12 years before that, he said. The $114 million that school officials had planned to request would be about a 7 percent increase over last year’s budget.

School officials pointed to the amount — about $81 million — that the county has in its fund balance. It is about 23 percent of the net, general-fund expenditures, which is the highest percentage of all of the urban counties, according to information school officials got from the state treasurer’s office.

“Do you think the average person in this county knows we have a fund balance like that?” board member Marilyn Parker asked. “That’s like telling your child you can’t go to college even though we have this college fund with $30,000 sitting in it.”

Turns out Guilford County has $80 million uh, lying around. Ergo, we don’t need an increase in the sales tax, contrary to what some might think. Something to think about come May 6.
