Via Locker Room, I read Kay Hagan’s criticism of Elizabeth Dole for supporting CAFTA. Interesting that Hagan is using an area with high unemployment, considering her views on free trade:

Hagan’s trade policy doesn’t call for the removal of CAFTA or NAFTA. Instead, Hagan wants to modify the pacts so they include enforceable labor and environmental standards to hold other countries accountable and to prevent companies from moving their operations to places without controls. And she wants the Department of Justice to have the authority to enforce trade agreements.

Will someone explain to me — I’m asking because I really don’t know — exactly how that would preserve American jobs? I’m not saying labor standards are a bad thing, but it seems to me they’ll be benefitting workers in other countries. I can only assume Hagan believes creating stricter standards will discourage companies from going overseas.

Most importantly, the article notes “Hagan’s plan does not detail how she would pay for the programs.”
