While the neighborhoods are overrun with little monsters this evening, it’s good to remember a different knock, on a different door, on the same date 488 years ago.
Besides the theological significance of the event, the centuries which followed have proven the power of freedom of debate, liberty of conscience, and the potential of an open marketplace of ideas. That has gone far beyond original questions of church discipline, doctrine, and polity.
