The City of Asheville’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department may bring the city’s first piece of public art, the Energy Loop, out of storage. Consider the name descriptive of the work. Three years ago, the sculpture, which was supposed to be only semi-rusty, got too rusty, and so was tucked away for refurbishments lest children get hurt playing on it. (Don’t children get hurt playing on anything?) It is funny to read the sophisticated excuses made by people not wanting the statue on their site.

In 2003, the City of Asheville spent $18,000 on another piece of art, Conversation Piece #4c, which went into hiding until finally finding a home at the Asheville Art Museum. Consider the name descriptive of the work.
