At last night’s meeting, the Guilford County Board of Education passed board member Garth Hebert’s proposal to give students the choice to opt out of the system’s recent High Point redistricting so they can attend their neighborhood schools.

During the board’s discussion, Dot Kearns and Walter Childs had the most interesting takes in opposition to Hebert’s plan. Kearns expressed the view that, with redistricting, children in inner-city High Point have the chance to get out and see more of the world (via north High Point) by attending Southwest Middle School and Southwest High School. It’s a global, competitive world out there, and the earlier these kids see more of it, the better, Kearns argued.

Childs in turn argued that children living in north High Point could learn more about the world by mixing with inner-city kids at Andrews High School and Welborn Middle School. But he undermined his argument that Andrews and Welborn are getting a bad rap among north High Point parents. That’s simply not true. Andrews and Welborn are good schools, Childs said.

OK, if it’s not true, then why are they not good enough for neighborhood kids to attend if they so choose?
