Helen Thomas, who has hovered over White House press conferences like some hideous gargoyle since Christ was a corporal, needs to be fired. She needs to be drummed out of the WH press corps and deported to Ignominy Land to reside amidst Jimmy the Greek, John Rocker and Fuzzy Zoeller, none of whom said anything nearly as offensive as she, but who paid huge prices for their utterances.

If you missed it, her she is in all her, er, glory, pretty much saying that Jews should never have left Germany:

She has now thrown up a perfunctory apology on her website that should fool no one. She is a hard leftist, and like most hard leftists, is an anti-Semite. Here’s her mea culpa:

“I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.”

No, Helen, they DO reflect your heart-felt beliefs and obvious desire to see Jews pushed into the sea by Palestinians. It’s time to hang up your pica pole and green eye shade and just go away.

UPDATE: More calls coming for Thomas to be fired and for the White House to revoke her credentials. Here’s one from Michele Bachmann.

And here’s one from Ari Fleischer.

UPDATE 2: Meanwhile, the MSM tries to downplay Thomas’ remarks. In an online piece about Hearst Newspapers refusing to say whether they’ll let her keep her job, The Washington Post has this to say:

Thomas has already expressed deep regret for the comments, writing on her Web site that “they do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance.”

Can you imagine a mainstream news outlet letting the words “has already expressed deep regret” be published about a conservative who said something the left considers hate speech? No, you can’t.

Hearst is taking a typically spineless approach to the dust up:

But it’s unclear whether she’ll survive this assault, and with Hearst appearing to be holding off on a final decision to see where the story goes next, her fate hangs in the balance.

In other words, if this feces storm gathers strength they might have to make Thomas walk the plank, and if the MSM manages to keep it under control, Thomas’ wrinkles will grace the White House press room for a few more decades.
