Caterpillar Inc. will break ground today on its 850,000-square-foot Forsyth County plant this morning. Gov. Bev Perdue will make the groundbreaking her first stop in her 2012 reelection campaign (gag).

Next door to the CAT site, Dell is wrapping up operations at its desktop computer plant. Note some of the comments:

Robert Leak Jr., the president of Winston-Salem Business Inc., said he knows that hopes of a long-term local presence for Caterpillar are no different than what was once hoped for Dell.

“This is a significant manufacturing operation and is much different from the assembly operation that operated next door,” Leak said. “The amount of investment in facility and technology will make it much harder to relocate in the future.

“We will certainly use the Caterpillar brand when promoting this community to other companies on our target list.”

They placed so much hope in Dell, and now they’re not worth a hoot, a business model vulnerable to shifts in the economic winds. So glad they’re telling us this now.
