Few people know about the strong bond between North Carolina’s long-serving U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms and Russian novelist and communist critic Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

Stella Snyder hopes to shed light on their friendship and working relationship in a new paper, Champions of Freedom, written for the N.C. History Project. Snyder also discussed key themes from her research today during a joint NCHP/Jesse Helms Center Lecture in Raleigh.

In the video clip below, Snyder discusses the continuing importance of Helms’ and Solzhenitsyn’s consistent anti-communist message.
