If the Chapel Hill nanny-staters were intellectually honest about their desire to get rid of driving distractions, they would stop obsessing over cell phones — which the town council will reportedly do again today — and open their eyes to the real culprit: children. I defy council members to find a neighbor or friend who haven’t been nearly sideswiped or rear-ended by a driver who is either feeding, scolding, dressing, singing to, singing with, reviewing school work, playing with, tickling, reading to, or lecturing a child in the passenger seat — or the real treat — a child in the back seat, which means the driver is doing a Linda Blair imitation while doing 70 mph on I-40. If the town decides to ban cell phone use, why wouldn’t it ban kids?
