Just when you thought all the corruption in state government was behind us and the honorables were finally behaving honorably the state auditor discovers another….

Rep. Mary McAlister (D-Cumberland), serving her seventeenth year in the General Assembly is the latest member to face charges.  The Charlotte Observer, in a breaking news report: 

A state audit says Cumberland County Rep. Mary McAllister used
resources of a sickle cell disease nonprofit group she runs for
political purposes.

The report released Monday by State Auditor Les
Merritt said computers at Operation Sickle Cell in Fayetteville
contained examples of political activity for the Democratic lawmaker.

McAllister is executive director of the nonprofit.

The
audit cites letters that McAllister sent to voters asking for
re-election support, along with scripts for campaign television ads.

But the audit said the organization properly used state grant funds.

In a written response, the group disputed it engaged in political activity.
