In this Washington Monthly piece, Professor Richard Vedder shows that student fees (often that the students are not even aware they’re paying) subsidize the sports programs at colleges large and small.

The root of the problem here is that higher education is sold as a bundle. Students usually can’t just pay for what educational and non-educational services they want. If indeed there will be a revolution in the delivery of education in the US, the unbundling that it will probably make possible would be a very consumer-friendly development.
