Speaking of Gov. Perdue, the Winston-Salem Journal says that while she “isn’t helping her anemic voter-approval ratings by pushing some $1.5 billion in annual tax increases,” she is “doing the right thing for North Carolina” because the state “cannot afford to cut public education to the extent that will be necessary without a tax increase of this size.”

Note the Journal leaves open the possibility that the tax increases won’t “adequately protect education.” Gee, can’t imagine that. Note also that the Journal once again calls for North Carolina tp “get its tax system in line with the 21st-century service-oriented economy,” which is code for higher taxes.

For a different perspective, check out Joe Colletti’s analysis of higher taxes and unemployment rates. Guess what —“North Carolina lawmakers would do nothing to help the state’s unemployment problem, if they move forward with proposed tax hikes in the final state budget.”
