That question probably sounds as if it comes straight from a philosophy class.

But Dr. C.L. Gray, founder and president of Physicians for Reform, says the question has major implications for the future of health care in America. Gray offered details during today’s John Locke Foundation Shaftesbury Society meeting.

A system based on Hippocrates’ ideals would focus on the patient’s needs, Gray said. In contrast, a system based on Plato’s ideas would make doctors “tools of the state,” basing their level of care on the worthiness of the patient to receive care.

Gray says Platonic ideas have gained ground in recent years, but insurance, tax, and tort reform could swing the pendulum back toward Hippocrates. Click play below to hear his ideas for reforming the current system of health insurance.
