Are these the same academics who said the Iron Curtain would never fall, and when it did they said Germany would never reunite? I remember those prognosticators around the time of glasnost and perestroika. They’ve been strangely silent for the last 18 years.
Not saying these historians are wrong, too, but if their predictions turn out to be 180 degrees out of phase with reality, who will hold them accountable? Probably no one. After all, Paul Ehrlich still has a prestigious tenured position at Stanford and no one’s been as wrong as he’s been.
