On the night of May 11/12, 1942, the armed fishing trawler HMS Bedfordshire was torpedoed and sunk with all hands off the Outer Banks by the German submarine U 558. The bodies of four of the patrol vessel’s crew washed up on the coast and are buried on Ocracoke. The Raleigh News & Observer had a nice article earlier this week on the sinking and the “British Cemetery” on Ocracoke.
