Prosecutors will decide how to handle allegations made today against two Hertford County lawmakers.

The N.C. Board of Elections decided to turn its information over to prosecutors for possible criminal investigations. Those investigations will focus on Rep. Howard Hunter of Winton and Sen. Robert Holloman of Ahoskie.

Both are accused of campaign finance iregularities described in a post earlier this afternoon.

The elections board has fined Holloman $1,750. Board members will wait to consult with the Wake County District Attorney’s office before deciding whether to fine Hunter.

Before wrapping up today’s session, the board also heard from Edwin Speas, a former top lawyer in the N.C. Justice Department. Speas presented testimony on behalf of House Speaker Jim Black. His affidavit challenges findings from an elections board investigator. That investigator — Kim Strach — contends that Black’s campaign committee broke state campaign finance laws.

The elections board has made no decision about fines or sanctions against Black.  Another hearing scheduled later this month will address campaign contributions tied to the video poker industry. That hearing is also expected to involve Black.

In answer to Hal’s earlier question, all pronouns seem to point to the same Robert Holloman.
