You know, it is downright fatiguing to believe you are being as far-fetched as possible only to see your boogeymen repeatedly come to life.
On the matter of the Coyote Ugly scuffle, I compared the joint to Hooter’s with belly shots and warned that Center City Partners killing Ugly’s move to North Tryon demonstrated the city-funded non-profit had veto power over what goes where in Uptown. Specifically, I advised that “mere Charlotte taxpayers need to be sure that the uses of their property comport with the wishes of an unelected Uptown elite.”
Now Center City Partners opposes the placement of a Hooter’s in Uptown:
Michael Smith, president of Center City Partners, said he suggested a different site in uptown because of complaints from some Charlotte residents and businesses about the site’s proximity to Trade and Tryon streets. The other location, which Smith wouldn’t identify, was turned down by Hooters’ representatives.
“It’s a ceremonial intersection of our region, and it’s a reflection of who we are,” Smith said. “The question has been called: Is this the kind of use we want at that intersection?”
Ah, Michael Smith and the royal we — is anyone really surprised? See, the kind of folks who go to Hooter’s are only supposed to show up during Speed Week. Otherwise the mullets clash with the khakis and all hell breaks loose.
