Wednesday was an historic day at the North Carolina General Assembly. Earlier today the North Carolina House of Representatives approved legislation which — among other things — eliminates the expanded waitlist for the Opportunity Scholarship and Education Student Accounts + Program. The vote was necessary since last year the General Assembly approved legislation to remove income eligibility for the Opportunity Scholarship Program.  However, only the Senate appropriated additional funds for the thousands of new applications which flooded the program this spring.  On Monday, the Senate approved legislation to provide funding (HB10) and earlier today the House of Representatives did the same. The bill will now be sent to Governor Cooper who is expected to veto the legislation.  House and Senate Republicans hold razor-thin veto proof majorities in both Houses. No date has been sent yet for a vote regarding a veto override.
While those steps are yet to be taken, the school choice movement in North Carolina wouldn’t have gotten this far without the help of countless supporters.  A special thank you to all legislators who have supported a parent’s right to choose the best education for their child.  It hasn’t always been easy.  Thank you for your perseverance and commitment to empowering parents. We look forward to taking the final step in this journey and adding North Carolina to the list of states offering families true educational choice!
