One down; one to go. That’s the expression school choice supporters in North Carolina should be using.
Earlier today, the North Carolina House of Representatives overrode Governor Cooper’s veto of HB 10. The bill, among other things, would provide $463 million in funding to help meet increased demand for the Opportunity Scholarship Program and Personal Education Savings Account Program.
Today’s vote was 72 in favor of overriding the governor’s veto and 44 opposed. The outcome met the three-fifths requirement to override the governor’s veto, with a few votes to spare. Sixty-nine Republicans were joined by three Democrats, Carla Cunningham (D-Mecklenburg), Shelly Wellingham (D-Bertie) and Michael Wray (D-Halifax).
Thank you to all legislators on both sides who have supported efforts to empower parents with real educational choice. We are grateful for your hard work and your courage to do the right thing for North Carolina families. The action now shifts to the North Carolina Senate, which is expected to vote on the topic on Wednesday. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we have more good news to share tomorrow!
