Now that state Sen. Ellie Kinnaird has resigned her seat, at least nine liberal Democrats want it. The senator, however, has a specific characteristic in mind for her replacement.
The names entered into the ring include Rep. Valerie Foushee, D-Orange; Carrboro MayorMark Chilton Alice Bordsen”, a former representative for Alamance County; Amy Tiemann, an author and media producer; attorney Heidi Chapman; attorney M. Lynette Hartsell and Jim Porto, a former Carrboro mayor. Kinnaird has said that she wants a woman to take her seat, and she recommended her long-time friend Bordsen to the party officials.
Sorry, but appointing a woman based on her gender is just as wrong-headed as not appointing a woman because of her gender.
