I was recently asked to write an article about the opening of McCain and Obama headquarters in Asheville. The lady who answered the phone at the Buncombe County Democrat Party headquarters didn’t have the information, but found it for me within the hour.

The lady manning the phones at Republican headquarters knew the office was moving, but could only get me the phone number for the front desk of the hotel. A member of the executive committee gave me the name of the lady in charge of the McCain campaign in Asheville and the suite number for the new headquarters. The lady in charge was not available for two days, and the office was locked. Still trying to get information, I learned the state party thought McCain headquarters were going to be in another part of town. The county chair for the McCain effort vehemently denied this, and a volunteer at headquarters said the state party never knows what’s going on in Asheville. I ended up calling Tallahassee, where the communications director put me in touch with the state representative who told me nothing I hadn’t heard. Anyway, there will be a grand opening of a phone bank in one of two places, and I will probably be at the other with a sign directing all those I misdirected to the first.

Meanwhile, I was wondering why Hillary supporters continue to meet every Thursday night at the Atlanta Bread Company, and why none of them replaced their Hillary bumper stickers with an Obama one to show party solidarity. The person at Obama headquarters who did not want to give his name, however, said one of the great Obama events was going to be a number of house parties August 26 to watch Hillary’s televised speech on the anniversary of women’s suffrage.
