The incomparable John Hammer edits The Rhinoceros Times, which began as a bar publication in Greensboro and how is a weekly published in both Greensboro and Charlotte. In a recent column, he predicted that both Greensboro and Guilford County would raise taxes in the coming year, in part because their respective political leaders haven?t faced serious competition in recent elections.
But here?s the rollicking core of his column, discussing a downtown redevelopment project called The Depot:
The Depot has been completely refurbished and for rent, but at the last council meeting where it was discussed, no spaces had been rented except to the bus lines and the model railroaders who agreed to pay $1 a year. Even Amtrak has not yet moved to the Depot, making the multi-modal transportation center a little hard to justify. People can walk, rollerskate, skateboard, bike or drive a car to the Depot to get on a bus, so I suppose it could be considered multi-modal transportation.
