Mittan: You both have alleged the other is collecting outside money. A lot comes in from DC. A lot of people think you are puppets bought and paid for by the national party.

Shuler: I’ve proven it. I’ve been able to vote independently. I am one of the most top independent voters in DC. I was about #11 this year. Folks on the left and right are disappointed in my issues, but I represent over 80% of people in this district and in this country.

Miller: We’re dancing here a bit. Cap and Trade was something Shuler endorsed at some point. What about card check? Shuler voted for that.

Shuler: We should be able to protect the rights of workers. I have a personal issue. My father was a mailman who sustained a serious injury. I played NFL. He wants to talk about his small business. I actually created businesses from the ground up. I’ve had 200 or 1 employee. I’ve made payroll. I can work with business organizations. How often does the US Chamber of Commerce endorse D’s? I have their endorsement and a few others. You live by the Golden Rule, and you don’t have to worry about anything else. We are not competing against Americans. We are competing against foreign countries to make sure we have manufacturing capabilities in the US. We need to build bridges rather than watching jobs go overseas. I have awards, I am a subcommittee chairman, I have created and run small businesses. I bring people together.

Miller: We can go back to Cap and Trade. I’m glad the union helped your father. That’s what it’s supposed to do. You’re supposed to represent your district. The last thing business people down here tell me is a union to come in. They’re bickering.
