Guilford County commissioners might ask the state for permission to raise the county’s sales tax an extra penny to pay down debt and —you guessed it—build schools.

What struck me about the article were the lame disclaimers offered up by commissioners Kirk Perkins and Paul Gibson, who said the chances of the request passing were slim. OK, then why do it? Well, it just doesn’t hurt to ask, especially when it comes to taxpayers’ money. That mentality has become all too commonplace.

As I read the article in this morning’s N&R, I kept waiting to see whose idea this was. Am I to assume no one’s stepping up and taking credit for this idea?
