I spoke with a friend last who has dealings with the N&R. He says the biggest down on East Market Street is that a potential sale would be a devastating hit for middle mangement. Odds on potential buyers are McClatchy or Gannett. McClatchy would make the most sense, considering the fact it already owns the Charlotte Observer and the Raleigh News & Observer. Adding the N&R would give McClatchy an Interstate 85 monopoly, then the three papers could just mix and match stories at will. Hell, it makes sense to me.

But no matter what happens, the N&R’s community activism— uh, I mean quality journalism—– will continue:

As always, we will do our very best to be fair and forthright and to provide a daily forum for community dialogue.

We will remain as focused as ever on local issues and as devoted as ever to helping build a safer, more vibrant and more prosperous community.

We still will follow the superb recent series by our News Department colleague, Jeri Rowe, with content and initiatives to help shatter walls and build bridges in Greensboro.

We will hold the third One Guilford leadership symposium on March 12 at UNCG and a series of town meetings on key issues.

We’ll still pester Triad leaders with the “R” word, as in “regionalism,” until more of them see the light of greater gains through greater collaboration.
