I don’t mind if people want to “be green.” I do not like it when they treat it like a religious inquisition. The City of Asheville posted on its website an interview with its new CSO. That’s short for Chief Sustainability Officer. The new girl said the city is partnering with UNCA’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis center to mitigate local disasters induced by climate change. She is interested in regulating private businesses – er, partnering with the business community – to reduce humankind’s carbon footprint. To that, I say some cultures tread lightly on the planet and have average lifespans of 56 years. Some people want to live longer, but have arthritis or hypothermia, and like to be toasty and dry in the winter. I thought we were supposed to respect diverse belief systems and lifestyle choices.
