Paul Krugman likes oversimplifying problems. He did it again today
at lunch with his policy analysis approach based on an “Idealized
Median Voter,” that is a voter who actually paid attention to issues.
Krugman, surprisingly, determined that the median “informed” voter
would rationally support progressive taxes, single-payer health care,
and other policies. Of course, he realized that the average voter
“quite rationally” did not pay much attention to every issue, but
rationality is beside the point when it goes against his views.

Krugman
also finished with the statement that he did not know why America has
gone against the world trend toward higher taxes and more government
control as exemplified by Canada, the UK, and that exemplar of the good
life — France.
