The prosecution’s factual statement of the case against Jim Black mentions a “private dining club” in Charlotte at which Black received some $18,000 in cash in 2002. Recall that FBI agents in October 2005 requested records from Carmel Country Club.

Black’s campaign reports do not show any expenses for Carmel in February 2002, when prosecutors say Black received $8,000 in cash at the “private dining club.” There is, however, a May event listed. Given how often Black’s campaign reports have been changed — the 2002 report was updated as recently as last July — who knows what that means.

The December 2002 meeting at which Black received another $10,000 does match up with two different Carmel Country Club events that Black held, one on December 11 and one on December 16, according to state records.

It is not certain, but it seems Carmel is a good bet to have been host to at least one of the money drops.
