From the AP as published on the CBS News website:

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor resigned Friday from an elite all-women’s club after Republicans questioned her participation in it.

Sotomayor said she resigned from the Belizean Grove to prevent the issue from becoming a distraction in her confirmation hearings.

In a letter to Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the federal appeals court judge said she is convinced that the club does not practice “invidious discrimination” and that her membership in it did not violate judicial ethics.

But she said she didn’t want questions about it to “distract anyone from my qualifications and record.”

Let’s be intellectually honest. If Judge Sotomayor doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with a women-only club, then she should stand up for what she believes and proudly defend her membership. Instead, she resigned.

If women really want to be treated “equally,” then we will acknowledge that a women-only club is just as discriminatory as a men-only club. For the record, I have no problem with either one. People should be free to join and/or create any club they like. But as long as our society continues to pound away the idea that women are victims of gender discrimination, then this type of club should receive the same scrutiny and criticism as the male-only versions do.
