I received the following news release from NFIB today.
RALEIGH, Sept. 23, 2013–The National Federation of Independent Business, the nation’s leading small-business association, is sending faxes, postcards and emails to its 350,000 small-business members, including over 8,000 in North Carolina, warning them of a Oct. 1 deadline for employers under the federal health-care law.
“This deadline has blindsided small businesses,” said Gregg Thompson, state director of NFIB/North Carolina. “I’ll ask members if they’re ready for it, and too many of them don’t know anything about it.
“Washington has done a bad job of keeping employers informed, so we’re doing it ourselves,” he said. “We don’t want to give the administration an excuse to play ‘gotcha’ with our members.”
Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the federal health-care law known as Obamacare, every employer who is subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act must distribute a notice to all employees informing them of their health insurance options, either through the company or the new Health Insurance Marketplace, also known as the “state exchange.”

“People might not like it, but Obamacare is coming, and it’s like a steamroller,” Thompson said. “If we don’t watch out, it’s going to flatten small business.”
