One final lowlight from today’s vote on SB 967, the Alcoa takeover bill. The next to last committee member to speak, Rep. Bill Owens, D-Pasquotank, noted that he opposed this plan last year but changed his mind. Why?

Owens said he had spoken with several Alcoa officials and asked them to “Please … put some jobs in North Carolina. Even though you can’t make any money with your smelting plant, there’s something else you can do here,” he said. “They haven’t done it … so the people of North Carolina deserve this resource.”

Now that’s a message the state’s economic development folks should shout from the rooftops.
