Phoenix begins full-scale testing of its light rail system today. Officials are hoping drivers and pedestrians catch on “immediately” to the many new signs, signals, and changes in turning procedures. I wish them luck. I’ve lived here for several years and am still confused by Raleigh’s beltline designations of “inner” and “outer” so I ignore them. From The Arizona Republic:

Downtown Phoenix is now dotted with signs that permit right turns on a green arrow only. And where you could once turn left on a green light, now you have to wait for a green arrow.

Arrows will also indicate when you can proceed across the tracks on so-called slip ramps, which provide business access on one-way roadways in downtown Phoenix.

As for the blink-out signs, they’ll light up with the picture of a train whenever one is approaching.

“People aren’t used to seeing these,” Engleman said. They need to get familiar with them immediately.

One signal you can ignore: the black one with the white bar that alternates between a horizontal and vertical state. That one tells the train whether to stop or go.

Got that?
