An N.C. House Bill (H.B. 1183) allowing some illegal immigrants access to in-state tuition rates,
which made national headlines when it was proposed in April of this
year, was defeated after a huge backlash by state residents.  The
issue, however, did not die.  Daren Baskt, responding to an editorial published by the News & Observer (reprinted here) decrying the missed opportunity provided by the bill to educate illegal immigrants, reminded readers that such a move would hurt Hispanics and our immigration system.
