That jarring quote comes from Wake County school board member Ron Margiotta, who was one of only two members who supported a study to determine whether or not the county’s controversial busing/reassignment program is effective.

The refusal of the rest of the board to test their opinion is the equivalent of the “because I said so” argument a parent gives a child when the parent doesn’t want to explain.

What are board members so afraid of? If a study indicates busing based on economic diversity is leading to higher student achievement, the board could tout the program and garner more public support.

Locke Foundation Education Policy Analyst Terry Stoops, who for years has called for a study to test the program’s value, responds to the board vote here.
