Mayor Pat’s Immigration Study Commission will drop its report any minute now. My bold prediction: It will please absolutely no one.

That is both because of the limited impact any local government can have on supra-nation immigration flows and because of the dogged insistence on conflating unrelated issues with immigration. Drunk drivers, for example. Yes, a few tragic cases of illegal drunks loose on the roads, but still not an immigration issue per se, just a depressingly common failure of the criminal justice system locally, statewide, and, in some of the cases of repeat offenders, nationally.

‘Nuther empty issue, official English. Who cares? Largely symbolic, but seems to address fears about assimilation as directly as anything could. If local jurisdictions want to spend 15 minutes to pass an official English resolution, go right ahead. But for some reason this does not seem to be taking 15 minutes.

And neither will the tedious back-and-forth over Mayor Pat’s report.
