A state legislative committee heard an update today on the progress of the federal 287(g) program in seven N.C. counties.
Ben Niolet’s report is correct, though one tweak might be helpful. Of the 4,511 people flagged from January through September 30 as potential immigration offenders, 3,359 were designated “alien violators.” That’s 74 percent of the total flagged for federal review.
The 3,182 figure comes from the number of “alien violators” processed and placed in “administrative removal proceedings.” The other 177 people were deemed to have violated the law, but their removal was deferred pending further investigation or the resolution of criminal charges.
It’s not a big change, but it is a slight adjustment of the N&O‘s numbers.
You might remember that the 287(g) program generated some headlines during the early days of this year’s U.S. Senate race.
