The mass media believes it odd the City of Asheville, which has done so much to eliminate commercial signage, wants a huge, lighted sign for its Civic Center. The city is requesting a variance for a sign three times larger than ordinances allow. The Civic Center is just across the street from Staples, who, by creatively working with the sign ordinance constructed a sign so huge it necessitated special trips by the mayor to Staples Headquarters up north to stop the people from , from, from . . . . Had the sign only been wayfinding for a public purpose, nobody would mind. The problem is, it will flaunt the naming rights US Cellular purchased from the building.
