Buncombe County has gotten the go-ahead for courthouse expansions. “Get out your checkbooks, folks. It’s coming again,” remarked one online reader. Defying the trend, Buncombe County managed to keep its budget in balance this year.
Next-door to the courthouse is Asheville’s city hall. City council just approved the first steps in a $5 million repair and renovation project for the deco-art masterpiece, which many say looks like a pink birthday cake. Municipal revenues, at last report, are running $1.1 million short of expenses for the current year and $5 million short for the next. According to city staff, “Staff is actively seeking federal support and grant opportunities [for which] projects of this type would qualify.”
