It’s hard to imagine a bigger self-aggrandizing moron than Phil Busse. Who, you ask, is Phil Busse? The erstwhile St. Olaf’s College visiting instructor who wrote a Huffington Post article on stealing political yard signs. Among the highlights:
Sure, I understand that stealing a sign will not change anyone’s mind, and, most likely, will only embolden McCain supporters’ disdain for liberals. Even so, yanking out the signs and running like a scared rabbit back to my idling car was one of the single-most exhilarating and empowering political acts that I have ever done.
And
But this illicit act of civil disobedience was something visceral. It was unscripted and raw expression. It was a chance to stop talking about theories and projections and get my hands dirty. Of course, I realized there was the very real chance my antics in rural Minnesota would be met with a shotgun, or at least a hockey dad tackling me.
Mature? No. Illegal? Yes. Satisfying? Definitely.
What’s lower than stealing yard signs? Besides, obviously, confessing in print to stealing yard signs. How about Busse’s hypocrisy: he’s an alt journalist and as such, is highly dependent upon free speech yet he derives great pleasure from removing others expression of free speech from their own property. And how does sign stealing in the middle of the night and then driving away in any way, shape or form constitute civil disobedience?
St. Olaf’s was not amused by Busse’s nighttime indulgences; he resigned on Monday. Nor was the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, which has charged Busse with misdemeanor theft.
