nnA former Charlotte Country Day tennis star was arrested last week in Raleigh and charged with a sex crime against a teammate. Dejon Bivens, 19, is a N.C. State freshman.

WTVD reported that the charges stem from an off-campus party involving members of the tennis team:

Details of the incident were released in a search warrant. There was an off-campus party last Friday at the apartment of one of the tennis team members.

The player told police he went to bed around 3 a.m. Saturday and was awakened two hours later by Bivens performing oral sex on him.

Police arrested and served Bivens with the search warrant that allowed investigators get a saliva sample. He was released on bond that same day.

You may remember Bivens from press coverage earlier this year touting his struggle to become a top high school tennis player. Bivens was adopted by a tennis coach and relied on donations to attend out-of-town tennis tournaments according to long accounts of his life published in The Charlotte Observer.

NPR used these stories to craft a broadcast about Bivens entitled “Courage on the Court.” Last month Bivens participated in NCSU’s “Champions in the Community” program in which Bivens “spoke with 70 young athletes about the importance of integrity, on and off of the court.”

The Charlotte news media — as far as I can tell — has yet to report Bivens’ arrest.
