While its coverage of local government pales in comparison to the Rhino, I have to admit the N&R has done a decent job of staying on top of the recent upheaval in Guilford County government. Which makes me wonder why this story on Smith Moore Leatherwood’s decision to back out of a contract deal with the county ran on B8 in today’s print edition, right under the weather.

I would say the N&R figures so few people read the print edition these days that it doesn’t matter where they run a story, still taking note that the latest Action Greensboro report ran front page, above the fold.

Meanwhile, the Rhino’s Scott Yost has an interesting story on the county’s transportation system:

Wouldn’t it be nice if – rather than having to deal with traffic or worry about the price of gas – you had a chauffer pick you up at your doorstep every morning and whisk you away to your job, and then, at quitting time, he or she would pick you up and bring you home? And wouldn’t it be nice if a chauffer took you other places you needed to go as well?

Oh, and wouldn’t it be nice if the service were virtually free?

Well, until a few weeks ago, that’s what Guilford County was offering – as long as you were someone in the know.

…Of course, while the cost to the lucky riders who knew about the service was only $1.60 a trip, the cost to the county’s taxpayers was almost $20 a trip, so for the county to take one person to and from work cost about $40. The service will take anyone who lives in un-incorporated Guilford County anywhere in the county.

That’s public transportation, alright.
