An Asheville City Council candidate was arrested for writing a worthless check. The check was written in June, the candidate was arrested six days before the primary election. The Citizen-Times said Selina Sullivan, who is employed as an accountant for Biltmore Farms, wrote a bad check for $1500, but added “one of the biggest bounced checks” was valued at $14,450. Whoever was bouncing these other checks has not come to light, but many are inferring it was Sullivan. Others attribute the disparity to the innumeracy to be expected from the media.

Sullivan was allegedly managing the funds and attendance for a spectacular religious revival that fizzled when only 100 of an anticipated 4000 showed up. Entertainers were supposed to be paid in large part by proceeds that didn’t happen.

In the court of public opinion, however, the oversight was minor and to be forgiven. It was, after all, for a church event. Sullivan was being politicized and discriminated against because she was a minority. Sullivan issued a statement indicating she was going to persist with her campaign in spite of the dirty politicking that got her arrested. By this afternoon, unconfirmed reports began circulating that she had dropped out of the race.
