Yesterday John pointed out minimum-wage referenda wherein citizens could harness the power of government and vote themselves largesse from other citizens’ treasuries. Ah, democracy.

That same day I read the report of a man arrested in New York for tipping too little (charge: ?misdemeanor theft of services”). The scoundrel apparently left only 10% when the waitstaff expected 18%.

The story improves today with the news the low tipper has been released. One cheer for sensible local authorities, who point out the difference between a “gratuity” and a “charge”.

The question remains why in the world law enforcement went along with this to begin with?
