The French media reaction to Hurricane Katrina gave schadenfreude a whole new dimension. The storm, they said, exposed the rotten underbelly and the class schisms in the United States. W-e-l-l-l-l. Now Paris is burning as North African and Muslim immigrant suburbs erupt after years of, you guessed it, being treated like second-class citizens in enlightened France. Somehow, I bet France2, the government-run television network that took every opportunity to trash the U.S. during Katrina, isn’t being as quick to find societal rot in La France.
