Today’s blocking of the renewal of the Patriot Act, by mostly Democrats with four Republican fellow travelers, got my conspiratorial juices flowing. The conventional wisdom is that Democrats simply hate the president and they’re doing anything to put roadblocks in his way, that they have no plan.
But what if this is part of a plan: to force the president into a position where he has to break the law in order to protect the country? That’s what Iran-Contra was all about: going around a pink-tinged Senate to get arms to people fighting communism in our hemisphere. Today, Reagan would have been impeached.
Could that be what Democrats (and their “moderate” GOP allies) are up to? Does anyone doubt that if it required breaking a law ? rescinded arbitrarily by an unwise BDS-besotted Senate ? to prevent another 9/11 that Bush would do so?
Which is why holding on to the House, which has the sole power of impeachment, is so important for Republicans.
